APP REVIEW: Ink (the other "Ink") for Android

Ink - Sketch, paint, draw

"Competition improves the breed" so they say, and any Android drawing app is welcome on my tablet as long as it's good. Ink (not to be confused with Autodesk Sketchbook Ink) makes the claim that "The engine is Really Fast ! There is No delay between the touch and the following line." so does it live up to they hype?

I purchased Ink because of this boast. I really need to feel that the full potential of the pen stylus is being exploited, and that anything I draw will be as accurate and reflect the feel of pen or pencil on paper as realistically as possible.

The Ink start screen has a very creative backdrop that sets a very high expectation with images of Pantone color charts, the corner of a Wacom tablet, and a nice, fat sketching marker. On this promising tableau is a row of faux sketchbooks that you can add to and delete and they act as virtual representations of the real thing. Opening a sketchbook either reveals past drawings to edit or blank pages upon which to draw.

The main drawing interface reveals the layers button, a pipette for grabbing colors from the screen, a color picker and 6 main drawing tools. This toolset is as basic as it gets: with a very limited number of brushes and options, which is fine as long as they are useful and work well, right?

Generally, the pen feel is excellent, with only occasional polygonalization when drawing large, fast curves with the more complex or large brushes. Although the performance is right up there with the rest, the lack of some basic tools and features hampers it when compared against the competition.

If you're looking for a fun, basic sketching tool, Ink does the trick, but you will very quickly run up against its edges.

It's quirky! The coffee pot that distorts perspective...

Obviously what the coffee pot sees...

Looks like Angry Man is about to get swatted with a tennis racket.

Some great examples of the 3rd layer in action.
